it’s The age-old question:

“what should I wear?”

When it comes to outfit suggestions, I leave you with one rule to follow:

wear what feels most like YOU!

Beyond this, the recommendations below are based on what photographs well and best suites the session experience. However, the ultimate goal is that you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing and look like yourself in the photos!

DO

✓ Wear colours that photograph well

  • Neutrals (white, beige, and greys)

  • Muted and/or earthy tones

  • Denim (any shade of blue, black, or muted colours)

  • Simple patterns (if you’re going to do a pattern)

Please Note: Black and white together create a lot of contrast. It is best to stick to either a lighter tone range or a darker tone range for groups. However, one in black and one in white is more feasible for couples who want each to uniquely pop in the photos.

✓ Coordinate with all people being photographed

  • tHINK gENERAL: It’s best to stick within a general colour pallet, and then have diversity within it an overall look/or theme for everyone

  • If everyone’s wearing green while one person is in orange, they’ll stick out!

✓ Wear clothes that you can move in

  • You’ll experience some movement-based prompts, so wear something that is breathable and doesn’t restrict any movement or make you stiff

these photos are examples of earthy/neutral colour palettes, simple patterns, good outfit coordination, and simple attire.

✓ Dress accordingly

  • Consider the time of day

    • Are you taking photos during mid-day with harsh sunlight? I highly suggest wearing lighter colours and muted tones to minimize the harshness. lower-contrast outfits are key.

    • Is your session during golden hour? This is when it is safer to wear darker colours/blacks.

  • Consider the location

    • Are we trekking through a forest? Then a puffy vest and weather may fit better than a sundress for the beach

  • Consider the weather

    • rAIN: Your session will still happen on a rainy day, so please dress for the weather! I will have clear umbrellas to use as props to keep you dry.

    • Cold/windy: Be sure to layer up, OR BRING A JACKET TO WEAR WHILE WE AREN’T ACTIVELY TAKING PHOTOS

    • Heat: eXPECT US TO BE MOVING AROUND - Wear clothes that can keep you cool and don’t show much for sweat stains

✓ Accessorize

  • bring out your personality A statement piece of jewellery, a favourite hat, or a fun jacket, etc.

  • Switch it up!

    • While each package has restrictions around how many outfits are permitted, you are welcome to bring one or two accessories and/or clothing items that can be easily taken on/off within a few seconds to add some variety to your look

      • Hats, layers such as jackets, cardigans and flannels, and quick changes in footwear are all welcome!

✓ keep it simple!

  • A nice top and jeans or a simple sweater with a nice layer over it is always a safe option

These Photos are examples of dressing for the weather, accessorizing, and simple outfit changes by swaping a layer.

dON’T

✖ Wear Vibrant colours, bold patterns, or large logos

  • Tie-dye, bright colours, and larger/chunky patterns don’t typically photograph well

  • Please note:

    • Colours are still great if they are less vibrant

      • Think mustard instead of bright yellow, or olive green instead of lime green

    • Flannels are A-OK!

✖ Wear something that you’ve never worn before

  • You know your button-up with the collar that’s constantly popping? Or the pants that never really sit on your waist quite right? Well, it’s great to know that about your clothes BEFORE you take photos in them! Don’t wear something for the first time for your photos to help avoid any unexpected clothing mishaps.

  • If you’re going to buy something new for your session, wear it for a day beforehand

✖ Be matchy-matchy (especially for groups)!

  • Remember the 90’s when having the whole family in a white top and jeans was the norm? These days that’s an example of what not to do! Unless you’re intentionally wanting to all wear an identical outfit, just keep clothing within the same general look.

These photos are examples of bold patterns and outfits that are too matchy

✖ Wear poor footware

  • If you’re opting for a cute pair of shoes that have heels or give blisters, bring along a comfy pair that you can walk in and put on the nice shoes when we reach the main spot within the location

  • Lots of the locations might have a bit of mud on the path - make sure you’re wearing something that you’re okay with getting a bit dirty

carry your high-heels with you until we reach the best spot!

I look forward to photographing you in the outfit that you decide on! If you need any further advice or tips, please don’t hesitate to ask! No matter what, if you feel good you’ll look good too!
